NFC business cards: what they are, how they work and why they’re worth it

The paper business card has had its day. It gets lost, it runs out, it gets thrown away after two days at the bottom of a pocket. NFC business cards solve all three problems at once: a tap and a smartphone are all it takes to share your contact details, your website and your social media – without ever printing another copy.

In this article we explain what they are, how they really work and why more and more professionals and companies are adopting them. And if in the end you decide you’d like one customised with your identity, you already know who to ask.

What are NFC business cards?

An NFC business card is a physical card – usually rigid, the same size as a credit card – with a small NFC (Near Field Communication) chip inside. Instead of a list of printed numbers and addresses, the chip holds a digital link: just hold the card near the smartphone of the person in front of you and your full contact card appears on their screen, ready to save to their contacts with a tap.

No app to download, no scribbling on the back of a napkin: one single card, always up to date, that replaces the whole stack of cards that used to end up in a drawer.

How NFC technology works

NFC is the same technology you already use every day to pay with your phone instead of your card. It works at very short range (a few centimetres) and needs neither internet nor batteries: the chip “wakes up” when the smartphone touches it and automatically transmits the information it holds.

In a business card, the chip is programmed to open a page – your digital vCard – with your name, role, company, phone number, email, website and social media. All the main recent Android smartphones and iPhones can read it without installing anything.

The advantages of an NFC business card

  • It never runs out. One single card, used again and again – no reprints when you change number or role.
  • Updatable in real time. Changed your email or your role in the company? You update your contact card online; the physical card stays the same.
  • More sustainable. No wasted paper, no cards thrown away after an event.
  • It makes a great impression. It’s a gesture that shows attention to detail and openness to innovation, before you even say a word.
  • It holds much more than a phone number. Website, portfolio, appointment booking, LinkedIn profile, Google reviews: you include what you really need to turn a contact into a customer.
